Student Anusha Porwal: Studies build a strong foundation for understanding speech and language technologies

Anusha Porwal's studies in Signal, Speech and Language Processing have built a strong foundation in speech and language technology and machine learning. She values Aalto's flexible course selection, community spirit, and student-led events.

Why did you choose the Master’s Programme in Computer, Communication and Information Sciences - Speech and Language Technology?

I developed an interest in Natural Language Processing (NLP) during my Bachelor's. I worked on multiple small projects, and my final project was also focused on NLP. My interest in these projects along with my fascination with machine learning motivated me to deepen my expertise in this field. Aalto’s SLT Master’s programme stood out to me because of its focus on language technology and the option to take supporting courses on Machine Learning and AI.

What has been the best part of your studies?

I've really enjoyed the teaching here - the courses are designed with practical assignments and projects, which make the learning process engaging and effective. I also appreciate the flexibility in course selection — it allowed me to tailor my studies to my interests. Beyond academics, the student culture at Aalto is one of a kind. The sense of community and the student-led events have made my experience even better.

What have you learned during your studies that you can apply in working life?

My studies at Aalto have given me a strong foundation in speech & language technology and machine learning techniques. I’ve developed the ability to understand theoretical concepts and apply them to real-world challenges. I’ve gained experience in problem-solving, ideating solutions, and implementing them effectively - these skills are essential for both industry and research fields.

Student life can be described in one word - vibrant! The balance between academic and student life makes Aalto a fantastic place to study.

How is student life at Aalto University?

In one word — vibrant! The AS Guild has played a huge role in introducing and integrating us into the student life here. The events and activities have made it easy to meet new people and experience a different culture. I’ve made incredible friends and had some truly memorable experiences through these events. The balance between academic and student life at Aalto makes it a fantastic place to study.

What does the future look like for the field?

The future looks promising! Whether you're looking to pursue a Doctoral degree or trying to find a job, the speech and language technology field is evolving rapidly. With advancements in machine learning algorithms and increasing hardware capabilities, there are exciting opportunities in areas like conversational AI, applications of automatic speech recognition, biomarking of speech, and privacy in speech, to name a few.
