Future Telecommunications: TelecomAI and System on Chips design are facing a severe talent crunch in the industry

As the world continues to move towards a more connected future, the importance of semiconductors, System-on-Chip (SoC), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the telecommunications industry cannot be overstated. Without these technologies, we cannot build the next generation networks that enable a hyperconnected society, supporting a sustainable and equal world.

Contribute to the development of the next generation of communications networks

Our future depends on pushing telecommunications technologies forward. Artificial Intelligence, and particularly Machine Learning, is creating a new technological disruption that extends far beyond current user-facing applications. It has implications for telecommunications and industrial processes. Artificial Intelligence in Telecommunications (TelecomAI) is becoming an increasingly important area of focus in the industry, with many companies investing in research and development to stay at the forefront of this field.

The lack of talented engineers is already strongly felt in the industry worldwide, including universities. Knowledge of electronics engineering has become a critical and integral part of this future trend. Semiconductors are the building blocks of modern electronics, while SoCs are the backbone of modern communication systems. On the other hand, AI plays a critical role in improving the performance, efficiency, and security of these systems, and AI requires accelerators that are usually implemented as part of future SoCs.

Pursuing a career in SoCs and Telecommunications AI offers an exciting and fulfilling career path for electrical engineering students. The intellectual challenge offered by field and future career opportunities are nearly limitless.

Become a part of the exiting and innovative world of Telecommunications AI and SoCs

Let's start now, design your own career, and find many opportunities to work on cutting-edge technologies, contribute to the development of a sustainable society, and develop highly transferable skills that will be in high demand by employers.

Aalto University offers excellent study paths for students to specialise in relevant technologies or to add highly relevant courses to your programme to widen perspective and opportunities in future careers. An electrical engineer specialising in SoCs and/or Telecommunications AI offers degree with highly transferable skills, opening up a wide range of career paths in various industries. Choosing to work in telecommunications, aerospace, automotive, or any other industry, the skills developed in this field will be highly sought after by employers. This combination also opens excellent opportunities to pursue doctoral studies at the university or combine an industry career with research.

Students’ opportunities for language learning to expand from autumn 2026

Founded in 2025, KiePe – Network for Language Centre Pedagogy, Teaching and Research – will broaden the range of language courses available to students at universities in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The KiePe network, composed of the University of Helsinki, Aalto University, the University of the Arts Helsinki, and Hanken School of Economics, will offer their students the chance to take elective language courses at any of the network universities in the future.
Students will be able register for courses via the cross-institutional studies service (RIPA) from autumn 2026. By autumn 2028, the study paths of the network universities will be harmonised to some extent, which will make cross-institutional studies even easier.
Students wishing to take language courses outside their home university can register for language courses offered by the network universities through the cross-institutional studies service and view the course offerings on the universities’ websites. More detailed information about the course offering and registration practices will be provided in August 2026.
