Sisu’s Timeline and Structure of studies views to be improved based on student feedback

The recent redesign of the Timeline and Structure of studies has elicited extensive feedback from students. The system provider, Funidata Oy, has already made some improvements to Sisu and will continue to develop the views in 2026 based on the feedback.

The Sisu user interface was redesigned at the end of 2025 to meet accessibility requirements, with the biggest changes affecting the Timeline and Structure of studies views. The updates prompted a lot of feedback immediately after their release, as the new views were seen as offering insufficient support for study planning.

Feedback was particularly extensive regarding the usability of the Timeline view: the previous horizontal timeline was considered clear and helpful for getting an overall idea of the distribution of studies at a glance, while the new vertical course listing is considered difficult to interpret. The new view does not provide an overview of several years of studies at once, making it harder for students to get an idea of their total workload.  In addition, unscheduled courses and courses spanning multiple periods are difficult to distinguish in the new view. On the positive side, students noted that full course names are now visible and that the new timeline view scales better on mobile devices.

In the feedback on the Structure of studies view, many reported difficulties in understanding the study plan structure and its different sections and related problems with making selections and navigating in the system.

In response to the feedback, Funidata is currently working on fixes to improve the readability of the views and make key functions clearer. Improvements will be released in stages during 2026, and some have already been implemented. The goal is to provide views that better support students’ work.

Additional improvements in the pipeline include the addition of timing templates for Aalto degree programmes to make the timeline view easier to use, and the clarification of the degree structures for the new curriculum period where possible.

Students’ opportunities for language learning to expand from autumn 2026

Founded in 2025, KiePe – Network for Language Centre Pedagogy, Teaching and Research – will broaden the range of language courses available to students at universities in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The KiePe network, composed of the University of Helsinki, Aalto University, the University of the Arts Helsinki, and Hanken School of Economics, will offer their students the chance to take elective language courses at any of the network universities in the future.
Students will be able register for courses via the cross-institutional studies service (RIPA) from autumn 2026. By autumn 2028, the study paths of the network universities will be harmonised to some extent, which will make cross-institutional studies even easier.
Students wishing to take language courses outside their home university can register for language courses offered by the network universities through the cross-institutional studies service and view the course offerings on the universities’ websites. More detailed information about the course offering and registration practices will be provided in August 2026.
