Fees put on all applications for return of study right; handling fee to rise in 2025

The application handling fee for returning a right to study will rise to 50 euros as of 1 January 2025. The fee will apply to all submitted applications. Service will be unavailable for about one week at the start of January in order to make technical upgrades to the electronic application system.

The fee for applying for a return of a study right (i.e. for readmission or reinstatement of a right to study) will be higher beginning on 1 January 2025. The handling fee will rise to 50 euros (from 35 euros previously). The fee will apply to all applications submitted, and it is payable regardless of whether the application is approved. The change stems from a legislative amendment that will enter force on 1 January 2025, Valtioneuvoston asetus yliopistojen toiminnassa perittävistä maksuista [Government decree on fees charged for university operations (1082/2009), section 4].

If you apply for a return of study right and your application is approved, you must enrol as attending or non-attending for the academic year and pay the Aalto student union (AYY) membership fee.

The change to the payment procedures will become part of Aalto’s new electronic application form for returning the right to study. In the future, the handling fee will be automatically charged when sending in an application. The application form will be out of service for about one week in January (est. 1–7 January, but could last a few days more) while the new version is being installed.

You can apply using the old procedures in the normal way and pay at the old fee rate until 31 December 2024. Beginning on 1 January, however, that model will no longer be a valid way to pay the processing fee or to enrol for the academic year. After 31 December, if you have an electronic application form pending in the old system (either in the processing stage or in the payment stage), your application will be marked as cancelled and the processing will continue outside of the system. In that case, you will receive instructions by email about paying the fee and enrolling for the academic year.

If your application for returning the right to study has been approved and is awaiting your payment of the handling fee and enrolment for the academic year, please do both of these tasks by 31 December 2024, but preferably as soon as possible before that. The sooner you do so, the sooner your matter can be processed.

More information about the e-form for return of the right to study is available in the Student Guide.

Students’ opportunities for language learning to expand from autumn 2026

Founded in 2025, KiePe – Network for Language Centre Pedagogy, Teaching and Research – will broaden the range of language courses available to students at universities in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The KiePe network, composed of the University of Helsinki, Aalto University, the University of the Arts Helsinki, and Hanken School of Economics, will offer their students the chance to take elective language courses at any of the network universities in the future.
Students will be able register for courses via the cross-institutional studies service (RIPA) from autumn 2026. By autumn 2028, the study paths of the network universities will be harmonised to some extent, which will make cross-institutional studies even easier.
Students wishing to take language courses outside their home university can register for language courses offered by the network universities through the cross-institutional studies service and view the course offerings on the universities’ websites. More detailed information about the course offering and registration practices will be provided in August 2026.
