Student pop-up exhibition KATTAUS renews tableware

Aalto University's first-year design students introduce altogether 34 variations for a table setting.
Table setting by Heidi Kulmala.

The table settings are a result of the Introduction to Design course where the first-year students got to explore materials used in design. The students designed and executed a table setting including plate, cutlery, mug or glass and some additional objects if wanted. Objects in the pop-up exhibition have been made using wood, metal, textile, glass and ceramics.

“We are happy to have our exhibition in the legendary Arabia exhibition space, which gives us inspiration. Because this was our first design task, there were some challenges in processing the materials new for us, but we managed to tackle themâ€, explains student Edith Kankkunen.

During the course the students familiarized themselves with the processes of design, different materials and their working methods, and visited all workshops of the Department of Design. Students participated in a three-week workshop course, using materials such as wood, metal, ceramics, glass or soft materials. The design task was carried out as group work and partly independently in the different workshop environments.
