New secondary side navigation on aalto.fi
To improve findability on aalto.fi, we have developed an improved and more structured secondary navigation menu that will be launched on Wednesday, 2 October 2024. During the update, the current secondary navigation menus, called ribbons, located at the top of a page, will be replaced by side navigation menus located on the left side of a page. The change aims to make it easier for all aalto.fi users, from students to personnel and external visitors, to navigate the website and find the right content.
Existing pages with secondary navigation will be automatically updated, as all ribbons will be converted to side navigation menus. In practice, this means that after the update, secondary navigation on all pages will continue to work as before, the navigation menus will just be visually different. Pages that do not currently have ribbons will not have a side navigation, unless a navigation menu is created and added to the page later.
Key features of the new side navigation:
- If a label in the navigation has sub-labels, the sub-labels can be viewed by clicking on the + icon next to the link.
- A side navigation can be hidden from the screen and re-displayed by clicking on the icon next to the navigation title.
- The side navigation will stay visible while scrolling, making it easier to navigate between pages without having to scroll back to the top of a page.
