New cinema opens its doors to the public

Kino Sheryl, which has opened in Arabianranta, supports research and study of cinema.

The key objective of Kino Sheryl, which is a joint project between the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture and student organization TOKYO, is to develop cinema studies and research, as well as to establish a place to screen student works.

- ’Kino Sheryl is a shared tour de force between students and Aalto University. Its objective is not only to provide entertainment, but to also develop Finland's cinema culture and film industry,’ Vice Dean, Professor Teemu Leinonen sums up.

Kino Sheryl’s screening schedule will include popular films, as well as art house films and films produced at the Department of Film, Television and Scenography. Thesis works by the department’s students will also be screened at Kino Sheryl.

’At Kino Sheryl, the average film viewer will gain completely kinds new experiences that are unlike anything offered elsewhere,’ states the cinema's Managing Director Ilmari Arnkil.

’Aalto University is investing in developing cinema. We want to highlight our film school’s high standard of expertise and the inner workings of our school to outsiders, as well as to test and research new methods for presenting and experiencing media,’ Professor Leinonen states.

The cinema’s VIP opening will be held on Wednesday 25 February. Director Roy Andersson will be present at the opening, and the VIP screening will be a preview of his film Kyyhkynen oksalla istui, olevaista pohtien. The cinema will open to the general public on 21 February.
