Kari Tammi appointed vice dean for impact at the School of Engineering
Ilkka Niemelä, President of Aalto University, has appointed Professor Kari Tammi as vice dean for impact at the School of Engineering. His three-year term begins on 1 January 2022.
He will be a member of the Aalto University Impact Steering Group and the main link between the steering group and the school’s management team. He will also be a member of the School of Engineering tenure track committee and co-operates closely with vice deans of education and research.
”Kari Tammi is a skilled leader with strong research and doctoral education experience. In his new position Tammi will build a broad view of the diverse types of impact opportunities for our school including students, faculty and staff”, says Dean Gary Marquis of the School of Engineering.
Kari Tammi was appointed as associate professor with tenure in the Department of Mechanical Engineering on 1 February 2020. The field of his professorship is design of mechatronic machines. His research interests include mechatronics, hybrid energy systems and autonomous systems.
His team works to improve energy efficiency and reduce life-cycle costs with modern tools such as digitalisation and industrial internet. According to Tammi’s vision, the energy and environmental efficiency of many machines can be enhanced by improving their systems of control and power transmission.
Tammi defended his dissertation on systems and automation technology (2007) at the Helsinki University of Technology. He worked as research professor at VTT, the Technical Research Centre of Finland, before joining the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 2015 as associate professor.
In the new, wide-ranging Master’s Programme in Mechanical Engineering, he is responsible for two courses: Mechatronic Machine Design and Vehicle Mechatronics. He has authored more than 90 scientific articles, supervised ten doctoral theses and more than 60 master's theses.
