Kari Tammi and Jussi Ryynänen appointed deans

Professor Kari Tammi will start as Dean of the School of Engineering on 1 July and Professor Jussi Ryynänen will become Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering on 1 August

Two dean appointments have been made at Aalto University. The deans will report to Provost Kristiina Mäkelä

Kari Tammi appointed dean of the School of Engineering

Professor Kari Tammi has been appointed dean of the School of Engineering and member of the university's Management Team. His five-year period as dean will start on 1 July 2023.

Kari Tammi has previously worked as a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and as vice dean responsible for impact at the School of Engineering.

Tammi was appointed associate professor with tenure in the Department of Mechanical Engineering on 1 February 2020. The field of his professorship is the design of mechatronic machines. His research interests include mechatronics, hybrid energy systems and autonomous systems. 

Tammi has been a member of the Aalto University Impact Steering Group. He is also a member of Academic Committee for Engineering. Tammi received his doctorate in automation and systems engineering from the Helsinki University of Technology in 2007. Before moving to Aalto University in 2015, he worked as a research professor at VTT. The technologies developed in research projects he led have seen industrial use by several significant companies, such as the waste heat recovery systems supplied by ABB for 14 container ships.

Jussi Ryynänen appointed dean of the School of Electrical Engineering

Professor Jussi Ryynänen has been appointed dean of the School of Electrical Engineering and member of the university’s Management Team. His five-year period as dean will start on 1 August 2023. 

Jussi Ryynänen has previously worked as the head of the Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering at Aalto University. He was appointed associate professor with tenure in 2011 and full professor with tenure in 2019. The field of his professorship is microelectronics design, especially in developing integrated circuits for future wireless networks. His research team focuses on the design and implementation of energy-efficient integrated radio frequency and mixed-mode circuits.

Ryynänen has been the head of the Electronic and Electrical Engineering study option and a member of the teaching steering group at the School of Electrical Engineering. Since 1997, he has held various positions at the Helsinki University of Technology, where he received his doctorate in electrical engineering in 2004.

Professor Ryynänen has been active in corporate collaboration. The most recent example is the doctoral programme launched this year by Nokia and Aalto University to strengthen the knowledge of future networks that is central to Europe.

The dean is responsible for directing the school’s activities in accordance with Aalto University’s strategy and for taking part in the long-term development of the university as a member of its Management Team. Deans are also responsible for the overall development and international competitiveness of the school, for allocating its resources within the framework of the university’s overall operating plan and budget, and for recruiting faculty in accordance with Aalto University’s tenure track policies.
