Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT to collaborate in a top information theory network

Aalto University and University of Helsinki have signed a general agreement on strategic collaboration within SoI network.

The Center for Science of Information, SoI, advances the next generation of information theory through collaborative research and teaching. Information theory is a branch of applied mathematics, electrical engineering, and computer science involving the quantification of information. Since its inception it has broadened to find applications in many other areas, including statistical inference, natural language processing, cryptography, neurobiology, the evolution and function of molecular codes, model selection in ecology, thermal physics, quantum computing, linguistics, plagiarism detection, pattern recognition, anomaly detection and other forms of data analysis.

"The partner universities of the SoI network are among the very best in the world, and several top names of different fields are involved. We are proud and excited to have a chance to interact with a research community of this caliber, and we believe that this collaboration will reinforce the role of Helsinki area as an internationally significant hub of expertise in information technology and utilization of digital information at large”,  states   Petri Myllymäki from HIIT.

Aalto University and University of Helsinki have signed an agreement to become strategic partners of the NSF Science and Technology Center for Science of Information. The collaboration activities will be coordinated by Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT, a joint research institute of the two Finnish universities. The member universities of the SoI center are Purdue (leader), Bryn Mawr, Howard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, Texas A&M, UC Berkeley, UCSD and Urbana-Champaign. Other strategic partners in Europe are ETH (ZĂĽrich, Switzerland) and the LINCS network (Paris, France).
