Five new professors pitched their research interests

Provost Ilkka Niemelä welcomed the five new professors and the 60 other faculty members to the networking event organised at the School of Business on 15 February.

Before the pitching of the new professors began, Ilkka Niemelä emphasised how important it is that the new professors will introduce themselves to their colleagues from all the different schools of Aalto. This will hopefully facilitate integration of new faculty members.

The following professors presented themselves:
Assistant Professor Themistoklis Charalambous, Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation, Aalto ELEC, born in Cyprus
Professori (Associate) Ari Jokilaakso, Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering (Aalto CHEM
Assistant Professor Kaie Kubjas, Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis , Aalto SCI, born in Estonia
Professor (Associate) Andrés Lucero, Department of Media, Aalto ARTS, born in Chile
Visiting Professor Eric Arnould, Department of Marketing, Aalto BIZ, born in the U.S.

Additionally, Ilkka Niemelä briefly presented Visiting Professor of Art Pedagogy Mirja Hiltunen from Aalto ARTS and Professor of Practice, Smart Buildings and Services Heikki Ihasalo from AALTO ELEC, who could not attend the event.

After the pitches, Professor Eric Arnould gave the keynote speech entitled “Composing consumer culture theory".

According to Professor Eric Arnould, rather than viewing culture as a fairly homogenous system of collectively shared meanings, ways of life, and unifying values shared by a member of society (e.g. Americans share this kind of culture, Japanese share that kind of culture), Consumer Culture Theory (CCT) explores the heterogeneous distribution of meanings and the multiplicity of overlapping cultural groupings. CCT explores the before mentioned issues within the broader socio-historical frame of globalization and market capitalism.

After the more formal part of the networking event, Ilkka Niemelä welcomed all to Chydenia restaurant to have a snack and to continue to build networks within the community.

Communications Services’ Events team organised the Professors’ networking event already for the 9th time.
