Apply now: Study Wellbeing Innovation in Tongji Summer School in China this August

European students in design, engineering, architecture and business are invited to join a cross-cultural learning experience bringing European and Chinese students together at Tongji University, one of China’s leading universities in Shanghai.

The summer school program combines on-site exploration, hands-on innovation, and cultural discovery.

What: 

This program offers lectures on design for wellbeing, visits to Chinese high-tech and design-driven companies, and insights into Chinese innovation ecosystems, while participants investigate wellbeing challenges faced by local residents in Shanghai. You will work on a real wellbeing challenge, generating ideas and prototyping solutions together in teams with European and Chinese students, and explore the cultural and innovation landscape in Shanghai.

This course takes place in Sino-Finnish Centre, Tongji University, Shanghai 1-14 August 2026. The course is worth 3 credits (Please, note the credits must be included in your Aalto degree.)

Who can apply: 

Tongji University Summer School is open for European students of selected partner universities representing diverse study fields (Engineering, Design and Business). Aalto University degree seeking students (Bachelor or Master) with good study performance, fluent English language skills and motivation in design, engineering and business are invited to apply. 

 

Costs and scholarships: 

Aalto University grants max 4 mobility scholarships to the selected students (1250€/student). Tongji University offers accommodation, meals and local transportation to the participants. Any other costs (such as travel insurance) are on the responsibility of the participating students. 

 Aalto internal application period and procedure: 

  • Application period 8 - 24 April. Please, note complete applications must be submitted by 24 April 2026 at 12:00 (noon, Finnish time). Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. 
  • Mandatory attachments to the application: Aalto transcript of records and approved study plan (to guarantee the summer school credits can be included in the student’s Aalto Bachelor or Master degree) 
  • Contact exchanges-eng@aalto.fi to express your interest and to receive online application instructions.  Please, reserve time for preparing the application including for the mandatory study plan approval in your degree programme. Please, note the complete application with the required attachments must be submitted by noon 24 April at the latest.  
  • Applicants will be informed on the results of Aalto internal selection on 30 April. Please note, the final selection decision is made in Tongji University.  

Selection criteria: 

Aalto students who have no prior study abroad experience during Aalto degree studies will be prioritized in the selection. Selected students should optimally represent diverse fields of Aalto University and be interested in design, engineering and business innovation in Shanghai. If there are more applications than mobility scholarships available (4), the students will be selected based on the academic study performance. Please, note Tongji University makes the final selection of accepted participants.
