UNITECH International is a leadership development programme for the fields of technology and science. The aim of the programme is to develop talented young students into future leaders for technology companies.

Participation in the UNITECH programme allows students to strengthen their leadership skills, gain access to international employment opportunities and develop a broad network of contacts.

The programme was launched in 2000. Aalto University was invited to join the network in 2023. The UNITECH network now consists of nine European universities of technology and 15 internationally operating partner companies. Its alumni community has 1 500 members.

‘We saw this programme as an interesting new opportunity for our students. The multi-disciplinary project work and a strong network of business cooperation support and strengthen Aalto University’s key approaches to teaching and learning’, says Jouni Paltakari, the professor responsible for the UNITECH programme at Aalto University.

The network will offer 90 master's students studying technology and science in the UNITECH partner universities a chance to begin the programme studies in the autumn of 2025.

Application period to open on 15 October

The application period for the UNITECH programme runs from 15 October 2024 to 1 December 2024. An information session will be organised at each Aalto school of technology before the application period begins. Applications are invited from first-year master's students in the Aalto University schools of technology. The selected students are expected to complete their first year of master’s-degree studies before the UNITECH studies begin in August 2025. During the programme, students will spend the autumn term on a student exchange, while the spring term is reserved for doing the master’s thesis for an international company. In addition, the programme includes three personal development weeks in different countries and professional coaching related to project work to be done in groups.

The UNITECH programme entails

  • a student exchange period in a European university during the autumn term
  • in the spring term, doing the master’s thesis during a placement in a partner company of the network, such as ABB, Airbus, Hilti, Infineon, Wella.
  • three (3) personal development weeks in three different countries, including personal mentoring and professional coaching from corporate partners.
  • a strong alumni network and professional network
  • employment opportunities for graduates of the programme.

The UNITECH Alumni Association (UAA) is an engineering professionals’ network with 1 500 members who have completed the prestigious UNITECH programme. UAA organises events for its members all year round.

Students’ opportunities for language learning to expand from autumn 2026

Founded in 2025, KiePe – Network for Language Centre Pedagogy, Teaching and Research – will broaden the range of language courses available to students at universities in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The KiePe network, composed of the University of Helsinki, Aalto University, the University of the Arts Helsinki, and Hanken School of Economics, will offer their students the chance to take elective language courses at any of the network universities in the future.
Students will be able register for courses via the cross-institutional studies service (RIPA) from autumn 2026. By autumn 2028, the study paths of the network universities will be harmonised to some extent, which will make cross-institutional studies even easier.
Students wishing to take language courses outside their home university can register for language courses offered by the network universities through the cross-institutional studies service and view the course offerings on the universities’ websites. More detailed information about the course offering and registration practices will be provided in August 2026.
