Aalto places 23rd in the world in a new ranking emphasising collaboration
Aalto University came 23rd in the World University Research Ranking (WURR), published today for the first time.
The ranking evaluates research multi-disciplinarity complemented by indicators to gauge research impact and research collaboration. These components are not always considered, even in more established university rankings. The WURR ranking aims to recognise universities with impactful collaboration to tackle major global challenges.
鈥楿niversity rankings have become more multifaceted to evaluate the different tasks facing universities today,' says Ossi Naukkarinen, Vice President for Research at Aalto University. 鈥楾he WURR's emphasis on multi-disciplinary and collaborative impactful research also describes Aalto University's strategic direction. I'm excited to be recognised for our new way of operating.'
The WURR ranking data is derived from the Web of Science database from 2009 to 2018. Multi-disciplinarity was evaluated by, e.g., the degree of multi-disciplinary research across different fields. Research impact was evaluated via publications in the most impactful journals and collaboration was measured by the degree of academia-industry and international collaboration.
At the top of the WURR ranking was US Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Aalto University came 13th among European universities and second among universities founded in the 2000s.
The international publisher World Scientific and WURR consultancy jointly launched the ranking this year.
