Using the vision offered by biomimicry, Aalto’s Applied Physics Department sees in FoamWood a sustainable, efficient, low-cost and bio-sourced material alternative in markets, like the packaging industry.
Through a holistic approach the project allies scientific research, circular thinking, design, and business strategy to develop a material that truly answers practical, commercial, social, and environmental needs.
The elongated bubble structures result in a superior directional strength compared to other bio-based foams: even harder and stronger than cardboard.
Unlike many bio-sourced alternatives, FoamWood can be fully bio-based, biodegradable in natural conditions and recyclable as carton.
The foam and the post-processing of the material can be set to enhance load-bearing capacity or recyclability. Also, the modular production process is adjustable to different scales.
