The space sector was transformed at the turn of the millennium, when a field once dominated by superpowers opened up to new players thanks to more affordable components and small satellite standards.
Today, there are already dozens of Finnish satellites in space, and most of them involve Aalto expertise in one way or another.
Aalto is one of the few universities in Europe where a small satellite can be designed and built entirely in-house, from start to finish. Aalto’s student and research satellites are also operated from Aalto’s own ground station.
‘The modern world relies on satellites. Moreover, our understanding of planetary processes and for example, climate change, would not be possible without satellite sensors,’ says Professor of Space Technology Jaan Praks.
