Academic achievements, Service Award and Independence Day Decorations highlights at Dean's Coffee

Dean Gary Marquis presented the 2019 Award for Achievements in Teaching to Postdoctoral Researcher Mateusz Janiszewski (left) and Staff Scientist Lauri Uotinen.

The grounds for selection stated that Lauri Uotinen and Mateusz Janiszewski have used new technology in developing a virtual learning environment (VR). In co-operation with teachers from different fields they have produced a virtual underground tunnel.

The virtual environment allows students to practice and complete learning assignments at their own pace and as many times as is required before entering the physical tunnel environment, with instructions available to students throughout the process.

Alongside their development work, Uotinen and Janiszewski have also conducted educational research, studying the usefulness of the newly developed environment from a students’ point of view. Students have appreciated the new learning environment and found it useful and a good support for completing the actual learning assignment. The new environment also promotes students’ well-being by increasing flexibility and support in the learning process.

Study results show that students’ learning outcomes have improved as well. The environment has been developed further with help from student feedback.

Publication Awards

The 2019 Publication Awards were given to Viacheslav Balobanov (D.Sc.), Postdoctoral Researcher Aarne Hovi and Doctoral Candidate Gonçalo Sorger. Each Publication Award was accompanied by a stipend of 2 000 euros.

Dean's Service Award

The 2019 Dean's Service Award was presented to Planning officer (Study Affairs) Päivi Kauppinen, for the first time.  

Independence Day Decorations 2019

On Indpendence Day 2019, University Lecturer Markku Kuuva from the Department of Mechanical Engineering was awarded with the honorary medal of Knight of the Order of the White Rose of Finland. Dean Gary Marquis presented the honorary medal to Kuuva.

Special Laboratory Technician Jouni Pekkarinen was awarded with the honorary medal of First Class Medal of the Order of the White Rose of Finland with golden cross. Pekkarinen was absent, and he receives the honorary medal on the next Dean's coffee 2020.

Professor Gary Marquis, Dean of the School of Engineering, was awarded with the honorary medal Knight, First Class, of the Order of the White Rose of Finland. Provost Kristiina Mäkelä presentedthe honorary medal to Gary Marquis.
